About the series of Twilight Democracies

The house of Democracy has fallen into disrepair

We have lived in this house for so long that we have stopped noticing the rot. We treat the leaking roof as a fact of nature. We step over the broken floorboards as if they were part of the floor plan. We paint over the mold spreading in the walls and tell ourselves that the structure is sound, that the foundations are eternal, and that the cracks are just cosmetic issues that will disappear with the next election.

But what we are witnessing is not just natural decay: There are people in the basement actively pulling out the supports. There are neighbors standing on the lawn with blueprints for a completely different structure. The collapse of the liberal order is not an accident of age or an inevitability of history.

This series tries to explain how the levers of power were captured, institutions were transformed, essential freedoms shrunk down, and all the important questions disappeared from the ballot when we voted . But this is not an elegy for a lost home. It is a manual for reinforcement.

The Internal Decay

It's easy to convince yourself that the spots on the wall have always been there and aren't growing. But you can't ignore mold forever. Our institutions were never perfect, promises of participation always sounded a little phony. Sure. But while we weren't looking, a new class of elites quietly took over.

They transformed the "open market" of democracy into a closed oligopoly. They built a "Glass Floor" under their children, ensuring that the new aristocracy never falls, while the ladder of mobility was pulled up for everyone else. They installed the "Dead Hand" of unchangeable treaties, debt entanglements, and institutional locks that govern us from the grave. The rituals of democracy continue, but all the votes and referendums in the world don't seem to effect the change we want.

The External Takeover

This internal rotting created a fatal opening. Soon 21st-century autocracies like China and Russia noticed. They realized they did not need to besiege the house, because the doors weren't locked.

They identified our structural weaknesses - our dependency on cheap energy, our universities' addiction to foreign funding, our elites' desire for post-office paydays. Then they walked right in. They turned our own infrastructure into a weapon against us. They bought our ports, integrated with our energy grids, and hired our former architects as their consultants. They did not need to invade the West to transform it. They became its landlords.

The Path to Renewal

But the demolition does not have to be the end. The same forces that are dismantling our world offer us the tools to rebuild it. This series is not just a damage report; it is a blueprint for reconstruction.

We can break the oligopoly of power that has seized the basement. We can cut the "Dead Hand" and build a "Living Hand" - institutions that are strong enough to support us but flexible enough to withstand the storm. We can make our societies "illegible" to those who wish to own us, rebuilding the strategic autonomy and resilience we sold off for cheap fixtures. We can learn to secure our home without closing the blinds.

We must pick up the tools and stop pretending the roof isn't falling in.
